Being physically active is one of the most important actions that people can take to maintain and improve their health and well-being. While physical activity has many health benefits, injuries and other adverse events can happen. The most common injuries affect the musculoskeletal system, which includes muscles, bones, joints, and connective tissue. Other adverse events include dehydration, overheating and cardiovascular complications, such as a heart attack.

The health benefits of physical activity outweigh the risks for almost everyone. Learn about actions you can take to do physical activity safely and reduce the risk of injuries and other adverse events.

If you have questions about or would like support with healthy physical activity, sedentary behaviour or sleep for children or youth, speak with a health care provider or a qualified exercise professional. Qualified exercise professionals are available free of charge to all people in British Columbia. To access them, dial 8-1-1 and ask to speak with a qualified exercise professional between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM Pacific Time Monday to Friday or email a qualified exercise professional.
